Album Review: Celebration - Madonna

When you have a career as long and as legendary as Madonna’s, it makes sense to drop a best hits collection once in awhile. In 1990, she released The Immaculate Collection, which consisted of her top singles from the 80s and was a major hit on its own. In 2002, she released Madonna: GHV2 (Greatest Hits Volume 2), which also did pretty well. So does Volume 3 measure up to its predecessors?

To me, good greatest hits albums from non-retired artists have two things - a lot of the older tracks that people know and love, and a couple new singles. Celebration has both.

First, the new tracks - Celebration and Revolver. Celebration’s a solid, danceable electronic song that’s in line with her more recent work. You get the original cut plus two remixes. I like the Benny Benassi Remix the best because it has a rich beat and a hard, driving bassline. Revolver [Feat. Lil Wayne] is decent, but it sounds too much like a Britney Spears track.

As for the greatest hits, this album has pretty much every single your average Madonna fan could ask for:

Vogue

4 Minutes [Feat. Justin Timberlake And Timbaland]

Holiday

Like A Virgin

Into The Groove

Like A Prayer

Borderline

Dress You Up

Material Girl

And those are just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, there are probably some other popular tracks that are missing, but most of the stuff I know is here. When you’ve done as much as Madonna has, a compilation is bound to leave something out.

Overall, Celebration gets a 4.25 out of 5. The old and the new are well-represented here, which is all you can really ask out of a greatest hits album.
