Album Review: Calling All Favours - Pathological Lovers

The minute I see an ad for a new movie, and a reviewer compares it to a well-known older movie, there’s almost no chance I’m seeing it. Because after that kind of analysis, you just know the new movie will basically be a bad sequel with an inferior cast. And in the same vein, I like bands that don’t compare themselves to other bands. On their MySpace page, Canadian group Pathological Lovers says they sound like “the first time...the very first time.” And let me tell you - the first time always produces a sweet, sweet sound. So it’s no surprise that their debut album Calling All Favours is a strong all-around effort.

Of course, after that long intro about how it’s cool to be original and not compare yourself to anyone else, I’ll go on record and say that Pathological Lovers kind of reminds me of Counting Crows, but with more energy. These aren’t angsty emo artists who revel in your inability to understand their pain. For the most part, the instruments and vocals are fast, happy and purposeful. More importantly, there’s real musicianship here. The songs aren’t simple looped guitar riffs that drone on and on - there’s variety, and you can tell that they put some thought into the journey that the listener takes on each track.

My favorite song is 101 Fictions:

101 Fictions by Pathological Lovers

The beginning accelerates at a dizzying pace, and once it hits top speed, it keeps churning like a runaway freight train til it comes to a screeching halt at the end.

Overall, I give Calling All Favours a 4 out of 5. Judging by the band name, the music video, and their website, Pathological Lovers is a group that puts out good music, and has a good time doing it. Save me a spot on the bandwagon.
